Morphology is the study of word structure according to the National Institute for Literacy. Morphological awareness is being able to understand and recognize word parts and their significance. Gaining knowledge of root words, prefixes, suffixes and grammatical inflections. Root words do not have a prefix or suffix and can stand alone. Affixes such as prefixes and suffixes are added onto root words to change their meaning and are not free standing. Morphology is a part of our everyday communication and is important for children to be able to comprehend.
